SCENIC ROADS

Rural roads are an integral part of the region’s tourism economy. Picturesque roads throughout the region have significant natural and cultural features along their boundaries. Scenic road designation has been a valuable tool in preserving the character and historic value of these roads. This designation can also help minimize or prevent modifications to the roadway which would detract from their appearance. This includes for example; widening, tree or stonewall removal, rerouting, and bridge replacement.

Scenic road designation can occur one of two ways: State Scenic Highway or Local Scenic Road.

The State Statutes authorize towns to adopt ordinances to designate Local Scenic Roads and govern the application to ConnDOT for State Scenic Highway Designation.
